Report to Town Council 2022-2023
The planting season began with a very successful collaborative project on the Templars estate involving the local Residents’ Association. Essex County Council, Witham Town Council, Braintree District Council, and our wonderful supporters from Aegon. A total of 32 trees, including Japanese cherry trees around the children’s play area, were planted.

This report covers the Tree Group’s major activities in seasons 2020-2021 and 2021-2022
The creation of War Memorial Park, located between Bramble Road and Honeysuckle Way, was completed in the autumn of 2021. BDC is arranging for signs to be placed at either end of the Park and an information board to be located centrally. The initial intention to create a linear copse to commemorate those who fell in WW1 evolved into a major project to remember all those who fell in war, generally including those who fell in the war in Afghanistan. In total, 124 trees were planted.

Report to Witham Town Council on the activities of the Witham Tree Group – 2019/2020
The 2019/20 planting season was dominated by the first phase of our major project – the creation of a WW1 Memorial Park, funded largely by Braintree District Council and supported by the Town Council. The site chosen was the open space between Bramble Road and Honeysuckle Way. The design, by BDC, was built on the existing hedge linking these two roads to create a linear wood copse.

Report to Witham Town Council on the activities of The Witham Tree Group – 2018/19
Whereas our planting during the spring of 2018 was in mainly ‘open’ grassland, our spring 2019 planting returned mainly to residential areas. These included several ‘greens’ in the areas of Brain and Trent Road, Epping Way, and Cuppers Close. We also extended the planting along part of Spa Road. For the area beside Asda, the District Council provided us with a replacement horse chestnut for the tree that was destroyed by contractors clearing the ditch.

Report to Witham Town Council of the Group’s activities – 2017/18
Another busy year of activity by the Witham Tree Group was marred, unfortunately, by further acts of vandalism. One of the first trees planted by the Group, a Pin oak which we dedicated to Jane Coleman former Deputy Town Clerk who had helped us so much in the early stages, was one of the victims, but with a bit of tlc and a splint applied expertly by Dr Teverson, the tree appears to be pulling through and is budding up nicely.
